One Little Question...

So, I've been reading John Holt's Teach Your Own and feeling nice and confident about our decision to homeschool our kids. Since relaxing a little on the math with Bonnie, our days have been so much more pleasant. Then one little question, casually asked by my ten year old daughter, makes me doubt everything, once again.

Mom, when I go to prom, will you and dad pay for my dress or will I need to save up and buy it myself?

  1. By the time she is that age, she can make her own "prom" experience. I didn't go to prom. It seemed pointless

When I was 21, I dated a man who took me out for the most expensive gourmet dinner this girl will ever have, in a limo, wearing a black dress and borrowed jewelry. I would bet my life that night was better than any classmate's prom night.

    1. Thanks, Jennifer, and I think you are right. (I didn't go to the prom either for the same reason.) Your fancy date does sound better than most of the prom stories I've heard as well.

It was hard hearing her assume she'd be going, but I don't even think she thought of it as a homeschooling/regular schooling thing when she said it.

  2. You'll cross that bridge when you get there. Maybe her friends who go to high school will invite her - or a boyfriend. You never know how that will all play out.

  3. Aww, man. Those little innocent comments sting, don't they? The other day, my 5-year-old told me how excited he was about riding the bus to school soon. Oh man. It was like all my fears and doubts came crashing in at the same exact second screaming "See!! You are so WRONG!" We talked about it, and he seems to get it, but "school" is such a foreign word to him in the first place that the whole concept is pretty confusing.

    1. I can totally relate to the school bus thing - both of my boys are fascinated by them, and not getting to ride the bus was the one thing I felt a tiny bit bad about when I chose not to send my oldest off to kindergarten this year!

  4. Our girls are totally planning on putting on an ultra-swank and cool prom themselves!
Believe me THE PROM is a terrible reason to doubt homeschooling... LOL
